Upgrading

As there are two elemental parts that constitute the core Gantry template, the process of upgrading can also be broken into two parts. The first part involves upgrading the Gantry library, and the second part involves upgrading the Gantry template.

Upgrading the Gantry Library

The Gantry library is a powerful set of functionality that is shared by all Gantry-powered templates. Upgrading the Gantry library means that all the Gantry templates will benefit from the upgrade in features and bug fixes.

The process of upgrading the Gantry library is identical to the process of installing it. You do not need to uninstall the existing com_gantry component in order to upgrade. First download the latest stand-alone library file from the Download Area. Save this file locally on your computer. Do not attempt to extract or expand this file.

Next navigate to your Joomla Administrator in your browser. Then choose the Extensions -> Install/Uninstall option from the main menu. This will take you to the Joomla installer area.

In the Upload Package File fieldset you will see an Upload button. Click this button and select your bundle archive you downloaded earlier. When selected, click the Upload File & Install button to proceed with the upgrade process.

The new version of the Gantry library will be installed on-top of the existing version. After you receive a successful install message, you can inspect the com_gantry entry in the Components section of the Extensions Manager to ensure the new version number is displayed.

Upgrading the Gantry Template

To upgrade the Gantry template, you must first uninstall the existing Gantry template. This is to ensure that you never accidentally upgrade the template you are modifying and wipe out all your changes. As you should never have a need to modify the Gantry library directly, this safety precaution is not in place for upgrading the Gantry library.

To initiate the uninstallation process, you need to first ensure you do not have the Gantry template set as default. So first you will need to pick another template as your default by browsing to the Template Manager in the Joomla administrator. Once there, you can select the radio button next to another template and click the Default button in the toolbar. With another template selected as Default, you will be able to proceed to the next step to uninstall the existing version.

To uninstall the template, navigate to the Extensions -> Install/Uninstall option from the main menu of the Joomla Administrator. This will take you to the Joomla installer area. Next, select the Templates sub-menu to be shown the list of templates installed in your Joomla installation. Now you can select the checkbox next to the rt_gantry_j15 entry, or any other Gantry-powered templates you wish to uninstall. Once checked, you should click the Uninstall button in the toolbar to complete the uninstallation process.

To install the new version of the template, merely follow the prior Installation procedure.
